Before sonar, lead lines were used to drop down to touch the sea bottom with depths marked off on the line. A kind of soft wax was pressed into the hollow on the end of the lead weight and this would pick up sand or mud or gravel on the bottom, so sailors would know what the seafloor was made of.
This one is marked off with yellow tags (the red ones have worn away). Good vintage condition.
Line is about 63' long. Lead part is 7" long.
